Raspberries: featuring Lyons Fruit Farm
All Things Raspberries (video below)
One of our favorite powerhouse foods that is growing locally and abundantly… Raspberries!
For many Michiganders, wild red or black raspberries are one of the first foods they learn to identify and forage from the wild. What an absolute delight it is to stumble upon a ripe patch of berries when you’re enjoying a Michigan summer day!
On top of being utterly delicious, raspberries provide many health benefits.
Raspberries are high in fiber, packing 8 grams of fiber (⅓ of the daily minimum goal) per cup. Diets high in fiber have been shown to decrease risk for breast cancer, improve digestion, and promote a healthy microbiome.
Another reason why we love raspberries is for their antioxidant content! Antioxidants help combat oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress is often associated with diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other illnesses.
At AlignWell we are passionate about equipping our community with tools that will help them heal from the inside out! We are so lucky to have such an amazing superfood growing in our own backyard. For those who don’t have access to a raspberry patch to forage this time of year, the Holland Farmers Market has several vendors selling this health promoting superfood, including Lyon’s Fruit Farm.
If you’re looking for a new way to add more raspberries to your diet, check out the recipe below!
Gardening Tip:
Thinking of planting your own raspberries? Be sure to do so in an area away from potatoes and tomato plants. They’re all prone to the same fungus so rotate these crops with other plants to make the most of your efforts.
