Apples: featuring Mann Farms
All Things Apple (video below)
An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Find out why AlignWell is pumped for another amazing Michigan Apple season.
The Holland Farmers Market is still going strong! Boy we love this resource and all the benefits it brings to our community in Holland, Michigan. This time of year vendors are absolutely bursting with delicious and nutritious apples of every color.
They can be bought by the small perfect quart, in half bushels for making applesauce, or as “seconds,” which means your apples won’t be perfect but they will be cheaper!
Apples (especially the skins) are super rich in polyphenols, a group of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect your cells from free radicals which contribute to all sorts of disease and cancers.
Another thing apples have a lot of that is fantastic for you? Fiber! The fiber found in apples is called pectin. Pectin aids in digestion by feeding healthy bacteria and it also helps lower cholesterol.
On top of these amazing properties, apples are full of vitamins and minerals and not to mention are scrumptious.
There are so many different types of apples; Honey crisp apples are amazing of course, but so are Johnny gold, Braeburn, Pink lady, and Golden delicious! Macintosh is more affordable and great for applesauce. Gala is touted as the perfect lunch box apple. So many choices make it hard to decide!
What we do know is that apples are perfect for popping in lunch boxes or as a snack on the hike and truly nothing matches the freshness of the newly picked apples from the farmers in our very own community! Such a gift.
We are including some of our favorite apple recipes below, but we think that apples dipped in peanut or almond butter is the perfect balanced snack. High in fiber, protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats, perfect brain food to tide you over!
